AFM provides prevention and education services on alcohol, drugs and gambling throughout the province. Provincially, prevention services are coordinated through the Clinical Director & Knowledge Exchange Lead. Prevention is identified as those services designed and delivered to reduce the demand for, involvement with, and the harms associated with alcohol, drugs and gambling. In its work, AFM is involved with various community-based initiatives, working groups and partners to address identified needs. Our prevention services are targeted across a broad range of the population, from youth to older adults. AFM strives to meet the needs of the community in a wide range of settings, from community agencies/organizations to workplaces and schools, providing prevention and education on a number of different levels. Prevention staff throughout Manitoba collaborates to build long-lasting partnerships with community agencies/organizations to foster a community mobilization approach. It is through such collaborations and partnerships that a strong sense of community responsibility is achieved, as important issues can be addressed through dialogue and decision-making processes. Specific services provided include: Workshops - AFM offers a variety of workshops on alcohol, other drugs and/or gambling that meet the needs of various agencies and organizations. AFM staff collaborates with the organization to plan a workshop that will further educate and/or inform the target staff and clientele. Courses - AFM also provides all Manitobans with quality courses that are current in the alcohol, other drug and/or gambling areas of addictions. Many of our courses are accredited with the University of Manitoba for the Applied Counseling Certificate Program. Awareness sessions- Prevention staff offer information sessions for teachers, counselors, support staff and other community members to provide information and resources to be used within the scope of their prevention and intervention efforts. Policy development - AFM Prevention staff provide consultation services to schools, workplaces and organizations who wish to develop alcohol and other drug use policies. Professionals, community members and organizations are welcome to call AFM staff to discuss their needs or questions about alcohol, drugs and gambling.
